These safaris are for anything from three to seven days; going on with the horses each day to a new place. Usually we will position the horses earlier, on one of the bigger private ranches near the Lolldaiga Hills, moving west from there and finally northwards, swinging round and back home. We use different routes, sometimes ones new even to us. Riding through the community lands will take us through what is often the most rugged and magnificent country. We mostly cover about twenty miles a day, with the terrain varying from the high-up cedar forests, down through stands of wild olive groves to the sandy plains in the north, where the game is more plentiful. After several hours in the saddle, riding into camp to find one’s tent set up ready by the crew and be able to just climb off one’s horse into a comfortable canvas chair under a shady acacia, not to mention the cold beer, is just glorious.
